GROCERY STORES TO BE COVERED UNDER
INDIANA MANDATORY TRAINING LAW,
BUT IMPLEMENTATION IS POSTPONED
UNTIL JANUARY 1, 2010

Grocery stores in Indiana will now be covered by the mandatory training law enacted in 2006, but an amendment to a bill introduced in January (HB1118) will postpone implementation of the law from July 1, 2009 to January 1, 2010. Governor Daniels signed the bill on March 19.

Sources have told us that the State Excise Police, which is a part of the Alcohol and Tax Commission (ATC), requested the amendment. The Excise Police are currently charged with training for 19 and 20 year olds, the only persons covered under the current mandatory training law.

ATC published a formal notice in July of 2007 that regulations to implement the mandatory training law would be drafted "immediately." As of yet, however, they haven’t produced any regulations or commented on when the new regulations may be published. We don’t know what impact this amendment may have on the drafting of those regulations.
